I get by with a little help from my friends…

Chronic illness can be overwhelming. When every little thing is a struggle it’s hard to remain stoic. In the midst of a severe flare I really have to fight not slip into a morose frame of mind.

When life is just too hard what keeps me going are all my wonderful people. My incredible friends & family are so supportive. I really couldn’t do it without them. I am a big believer in saying how you feel out loud, so I’m taking a moment to say thank you. Thanks for all the chats, the midnight drives to a&e, advocating for me when I am unable to do it myself, the cuddles, the laughs, the understanding; thank you for the love.

Not only are my people the best people, they are also a bunch of lookers. Big love, darlings.

She’s electric….

My beautiful niece was visiting from Australia recently and her curious little mind needed stimulation. Athena is an incredibly energetic and intelligent 5yr old, she is always full of questions and keen to learn; The Glasgow Science Centre seemed like the perfect place to let her loose. The entire family was keen to spend plenty of time with our little Goddess, so our party ended up including myself, my sister & our dad. The prices initially looked a little steep, but when concessions were figured in it became much more reasonable. We decided to pay a little extra for a planetarium show, which was an excellent choice.

We arrived at 1.30pm and made our way to the first floor of the science mall, which introduces basic science concepts in a fun way. There are maths puzzles (some of which the adults couldn’t work out), tests of reaction speed, hissing cockroaches, optical illusions & even an opportunity to captain a ship. The exhibits work so well as they are all completely interactive. It’s a parents dream; kids are tackling & understanding a dearth of new ideas whilst having a ball. Athena particularly loved the fact that we could all join in. To be fair, we grownups enjoyed that too.

Next up was the planetarium show, which was a real treat. The night sky lit up above you is stunning. The show is fantastic, another enjoyable learning experience for the little ones. They are encouraged to call out & participate. Amongst all the hilarity we discovered constellations, how to find the North Star & how colour indicates the temperature of stars. My girl was delighted with the experience.

The 2nd floor of the science mall is aimed an older age group. It focuses on the world of work & includes lots clever tasks that allow a young person to identify talents, interests and what careers they might enjoy. As most of this was above Athena’s age level we moved on to the top floor where we discovered body works. These exhibits work really well for a range of ages. Older kids would gain a deeper understanding of things such heart surgery, how internal organs work & the amazing things our bodies are capable of. However, the same exhibits work equally well for younger minds. The human hamster wheel and machine that allows you to see the veins in your body were particular favourites. There is also an opportunity to test your heart rate at rest & during exertion, plus a chance to impersonate your heart and pump some blood. The displays relating to the dangers of smoking and alcohol are incredibly effective. Being able to operate both healthy & damaged lungs gives children a real insight into what cigarettes do to lung function. There is also an exhibit that allows you see what smoking and drinking will do to your face over time. All of which leave more of an impression than simply being told these habits are bad for you.

Body works is also home to a number of detailed models of the body. You can perform a virtual autopsy and take apart all the piece of the brain. Athena was a little freaked out by these items, but enjoyed the gross out factor when I pretended to eat brains. All three generations got involved in measuring our height, our ability to balance, sprint and hand strength. I was a little disturbed to discover my 5yr old niece’s grip was much stronger than mine. We rounded off our day by playing with a giant pin mould, which proved a big hit with everyone.

In conclusion, the science centre is excellent. We didn’t leave until closing time (5pm) & could have happily stayed much longer. The tickets may be a little more than some other attractions, but you really do get your monies worth. We saw children of all ages, teens and even some adults visiting alone. There truly is something for everyone. If you want your child to learn whilst they play, the science centre is the place for you. In one afternoon Athena gained so much. In the following days she asked an abundance of questions as her mind processed all the new information. Little minds are sponges and it is really rewarding to watch them soak up knowledge. All in all the science centre gets an A++. I’ll even let you in on a wee secret; I think Grampa may have had even more fun than his granddaughter.

Thank you for the days….

Saying goodbye to my wonderful little muffin has been very difficult. It’s impossible to say how much I miss the girl. Normal blog service will be resumed, but in the mean time here’s another week in pictures. Night’s out with my favourite man, selfies with girl, my family, my city & my puss cat. I hope you see as much beauty in these images as I do.

Such a perfect day…

I love a wedding. I love them even more when I adore the couple getting hitched. So, I was pretty excited about my big brother’s big day. I really wanted to go all out & look fantastic, I think I might just have pulled it off.

I went retro. I found a beautiful swing dress that is absolutely perfect on my curves. I then enrolled a professional to give my hair & face an amazing 50’s makeover. I felt wonderful.

It was a perfect day. The sun shone, the champagne flowed & love was in the air. Having our niece & oldest brother home from Australia made the day even more special. My cheeky little muffin could not resist popping into my blog shoot.

No wedding post would be complete with the happy couple. So, here they are, the handsome brother & his stunning bride.

Because I’m happy….

My oldest brother & beautiful niece arrived home from Australia a week ago. They are visiting for my other brother’s wedding. Needless to say, I am ecstatic & have been spending every possible moment with my girl. There is just no time for blogging when the most incredible little person ever created is on the loose. Here’s a little taste of our adventures so far.

Stay tuned for my all out 50’s wedding ensemble.

Good day sunshine…

Happy Easter! It seems that zombie jesus ressurected the sun, for which I am truly thankful. Winter seems to have been upon us forever & finally taking a walk in the sun was glorious.

As usual we visited Mum. Shared some chocolate & chatter, then proceeded to take the dogs to the park. I adore all of my canine family, but sometimes when they get together, they are maniacs. Yesterday was one of those days. My sister’s boy Seb is desperately in love with Mum’s oldest, Coco. He absolutely had to be by her side at every moment (I’ll skim over the humping). As cute as this is it makes walking them on the leads a little tricky. Once we reached the park all was well. All three pups got to run free whilst we humans had a wee rest. If you’ve never seen a poodle in full run, believe me it is a sight to behold. They leap with such grace. In D’artangnan’s case the contrast between this poise & his usual daft self is adorable.

I put together a really cute, casual outfit and was pleased with my look. However, by the time I had done battle  with a horny lab & the dogs had found every spot of mud in the vicinity I was looking a little less put together. So, here is my dishevelled self. I mind not because those doggies give me so much joy.

Dress – Junarose

Flatforms – Primark

Headband – Ebay

Neither my Mother nor my sister was a fan of my floral ears. Judging by the looks of passersby, I suspect they were dubious too. I on the other hand adore them and let’s face it, only my opinion matters! I teemed them with these cute little side buns; my hair game was good. Worn with a t shirt dress & flatforms it added up to a great Easter park outfit.

When we want these babies to pose for a photo they have none of it, but of the course the minute we try to take some without them, they insist on getting involved. Gorgeous, but naughty pups.

The photo credits go to my sister, Lauren (as always), but she gets extra points for these beautiful pictures of the fur babies. You can check out her take on our day ( & probably more stunning pics) over at  Living in a box.

I hope you all had a happy Easter however you celebrate it.

Pretty Flamingo….

I had a lunch date on Saturday with my Dad & Sister. We made the excellent decision to try The Butterfly & The Pig and the even smarter choice of ordering a delicious bottle of rosé. The food was fantastic. They also have tasty gluten free & veggie options, which was lovely for me. Anyway after much gabbing & laughing we emerged back onto to Bath St looking for a good photo spot.

After a little shopping & some head scratching we plumped for a wee lane. It offered us some protection from the wind whilst also being a funky urban backdrop.

My sister had her work cut out for her as I was dissatisfied with picture after picture. However, we eventually  hit on just the right pose & positioning.

Studded Top – Asos Curve

Mini Skirt – Primark

Belt – Asos Curve

Flats – New Look

Flamingo – Craft Market

I’m incredibly fond of my spikes. They take this basic Jersey top to the next level. I am equally charmed by this bondishy belt. Be that as it may, nothing compares to the love I feel for my flamingo hair clip. I’m not usually one to latch on to trends, but the flamingos I am seeing everywhere make my heart beat faster.

My week in pictures.

The past has week has been busy, but fun. I have been writing up a storm, hosting a birthday party for a friend, baking, puppy sitting, Facetiming my girl, painting my nails  & joining the #bootyrevolution.

I have a body positive piece in The Swag Guide, I’d love it if you took a look. The Swag Guide is a scottish blogger magazine & it is fantastic.

My week in pictures…

It has been a week of highs & lows. There has been too much pain & too little sleep. Thankfully I have also been involved in some joy inducing activities. Overall I’m declaring it a win.

A financial boost allowed a wee spending spree. I got a few bits for myself & many bits of my muffin. She will be visiting with my big bro from Australia in April & I am getting very excited. I love Facetiming with my girl, but nothing compares to the wonder of wrapping my arms around her little body & squeezing her tight. I found her a My Little Pony dress that she will freak over & some super cute Comic Relief t-shirts.

Treats for myself included some budget beauty, freebies from
a plus size event & my very first pair of flatforms. As usual I’m sharing some random snaps of sights I enjoyed; Glasgow & Edinburgh both had some little treasures for me. Talking of the capital, whilst through there for the aforementioned event I was lucky enough to visit my favourite bar with my favourite man. This week even included some flowers, in my opinion white roses stomp all over red in the romance stakes.

I’ll leave you with my most momentous addition. On Wednesday I finally got my new tattoo. I went to True Colour Tattoo where I was inked by the fabulous Sharon. It was so good to finally be tattooed by a woman, the fact that she is an old school friend made it even better. I am ecstatic with my tattoo & I can not recommend True Colour enough. I can honestly say this was my favourite tattoo experience. I will definitely be going back.

Another year over, a new one just begun….

This year we suspended Hogmanay to focus our full attention on my beautiful sister’s 30th. My baby sister said goodbye to her roaring twenties with a very extravagant gatsby esque celebration. From champagne towers to dancing on the bar, it was absolutely the party of the year.

I wanted a really decadent dress with a taste of the flapper style. When I saw this Lovedrobe sequinned affair on the New Look website I knew it was the one. It jumped straight onto my wish list & in a very short time span, my wardrobe. A girl has to treat herself when her youngest sibling turns 30, if only to mask the panic of how old you feel. Needless to say I had a fantastic time as did everyone else.
I hope you all had a wonderful new year & all the best for 2015!
