The fire is so delightful….

We popped over to Dad’s on xmas eve & I took the opportunity to have an ootd pic by his festive fireplace. Dad always has lovely decorations & a very tasty selection of nibbly bits at Christmas time. Obviously a pretty dress was required for the occasion.

I decided to drift away from the traditional xmassy colour palette & opted for this rose print skater dress. I am feeling strangely drawn to all things yellow at the moment, which led me to the dress with this vibrant cardigan. I love the way it brings out the yellow in the dress, whilst simultaneously makes the purple tones really pop. I suspect my Dad is often bemused by my style choices, I thought I’d give him a xmas treat by putting my spin on one of his sartorial favourites. Enter my burgundy patent brogues & the most shoe compliments I have ever received from my Father. Great minds think alike, Daddy cool !

Mellow yellow…

Yesterday I spent the afternoon with my lovely friend Hayley who was visiting Scotland for a few days. I wanted to look good, which led to some serious wardrobe scouring. Buried at the back I found this dress. It’s quite old, but I’ve always rated it. However it was a very tight squeeze the last time i tried to wear it, hence it’s languishing behind the coats. My recent shrinkage meant that it now fits rather well & so, i donned it.

Leopard print in this shade of green is a dream for me. I love the button details & the sheer fabric. In winter I tend to teem it with a black vest & leggings, but as you can see from the picture this still allows a nice silhoutte. I paired my feminine floaty dress with the tough dm type boots for practical reasons & also because i like the contrast. I added the yellow batwing cardi for a pop of colour.

I don’t wear a lot of jewellery, but I do like a ring with a big stone. I have quite the collection of what I refer to as faux enagagement rings. This is one of my favourites. The stone is a gorgeous unusual amber. If someone offered me it whilst down on one knee, I’d probably day yes!

Wishin’ and hopin’….

The festive season is almost upon us & my mind has been pondering the notion of having some fun. Along with the usual seasonal celebrations I also have some important birthdays in December including my fabulous best friend & my darling youngest sibling. My darling sister will be 30 this year & she’s having a big fabulous party. I am determined to go uber luxe for these occasions & with this in mind I have created a party wishlist. Some of these are serious contenders & others are just me dreaming.
I have had hankering for velvet for a while. I’ve always adored it, but it’s popularity has definitely waned in recent years. Wearing velevt never fails to make me feel sexy. It is so tactile & lush. This sleek navy dress screams old school glamour. I have a feeling the side gathering detail will be flattering as hell on my body. I can’t wait to try this on & hopefully strut my gorgeous stuff in it over christmas. I feel a dress this sumptious need some simple show stopping accessories, these Biba earrings certainly fit that bill. Sadly at £1750 they are likely to remain on my wish list.

Layers do it for me especially if one or more of them are sheer. This evans dress is genuis, sparkly gold, sheer, built in cover up. Three big ticks from me. Similarly this layered Elvi top is so simple, yet striking. Elvi is actually a new find for me, so far, i am impressed.
Irregular choice are pretty much the only shoes I want on my feet & this pair are perfect in every way. They are currently sold out, but i am hoping against hope that they come back. How can anything go wrong when you have unicorns on your feet?

Faux fur seems like the obvious choice when playing the luxury bitch. Monsoon’s classic shape & colour make their take it on it a winner for me. I’ll definitely need to try before buying as coats are always a tricky fit with my boobs.
I am actually pinching myself over this Lovedrobe flapper style dress. I can’t believe it is so affordable & available in my size. A futher bonus is that this art deco type design is tailer made for a big event I have later in the year. I am snapping this one up immediatey & calling it fate.IMG_1060.JPG

These are my wild cards. They do not fit with my hollywood starlet theme, yet i can’t prevent myself coveting them. The shoes speak for themselves, what woman in her right mind would not want her feet adorned with these masterpieces? If anyone out there wants to have me at their beck and call those shoes are the key. The poodle clutch is so not me. I don’t go in much for cutesy or pastel. However my Mother happens to have to stunning standard poodles who would turn cruella deville into a dog person. Coco & D’artagnan have captured my heart & simultaneously opened it ip to kitch handbags.
Last but not least is another Elvi piece. Whoever thought up the ‘coatigan’ , I owe you a drink. Bright orange cosy coolness are all things i need in my wardrobe.

Twinkle, twinkle…

Today I overcame some spectacular heartburn with the aid of some sparkly boots. I’m now convinced that all manner of things may be achieved when your feet are not only warm & dry, but also just a teeny bit twinkly. I headed out with sister to engage in some party planning & ended up having a really lovely day.

So, after buying many, many balloons & a few less avocado maki we nipped out to river for some photographs. Today’s outfit was a mixture of the old & the new. I’ve gone down two sizes, so I’m now fitting into this lacy vest, which I kind of love mainly because it makes me boobs look perky. I have always been a big fan of the stretchy mini, fling in a busy pattern & I’m sold. Last, but not least is my brand new, super cosy cardigan. It’s a tiny bit starsky & hutch, but oh man is it warm.

Up on the roof….

I succumbed to cabin fever on Saturday night & took a taxi into town to see a film with my wee sis. I tried my best to get dolled up, but I’m not sure I was entirely successful. Anyway, it felt good to be out .this

I opted for this amazing tassle vest. I adore the electric blue, it gives a real kick to a simple black outfit. I teamed it with this dip hem skirt & a cosy black cardi to keep out the October chill. Our shoot failed to get off the ground due to a down pour, so we headed up in the air to get some photographs. The cineworld in Glasgow is, bizarrely, the tallest cinema in the world, which makes a great back drop for cool chicks in cool dreads.

Despite some bemused onlookers, I even managed a shimmy. Nothing beats shaking your tassles.

Oh & we saw ‘A walk amongst the tombstones’. It wasn’t incredibly original, but I like Liam Neeson & a thriller always pleases me. I’d say it is worth a watch.

it was a cold september before the indian summer…

As promised I ventured out this week. It wasn’t the wildest of outings, but it still felt good to put on a dress & a lick of mascara. My sister I resumed out little cinema club, but first we headed to the gorgeous Blythswood sq for some blog photos.

IMG_0615.JPG

September is being very kind to this year, which allowed me to give this little sun dress another outing. I picked this & another similar dress up in Primark earlier this summer. I love the colour combo & the patchyworky print. I love that my boobs fit happily into this bandeau style. I often have trouble in that area with no plus size labels. I felt very cute in this dress, which can only be a good thing.

Cinema club kicked off again with, Before I go to sleep. I read the book that it’s based on a few years ago & enjoyed it. I really liked the film; it perfectly captured the suspense of the novel. I’d recommend checking out both the book & the movie.

Finally. this week’s nail looked like this

Hey, I put some new shoes on….

Unfortunately I am still ill. It’s frustrating & not a lot of fun. It also means that I haven’t been going anywhere other than medical appointments & the corner shop, which accounts for my lack of posts. I finally ventured out today to do a little shopping with my mum. It’s the first day in weeks that I have looked half decent, so I took a little selfie to share.

Almost everything I wore was a huge bargain; god bless 70% off sales. The t-shirt dress is incredibly comfortable & may well be my new favourite casual dress. I wanted to add some grey to my wardrobe now that it’s getting chilly, this works perfectly. The belt is also new & is basically the belt of my dreams. I may well wear it with everything.

My adorable new shoes also arrived today. I could not wait to try them. They jumped straight out of the box and onto my feet. I purchased them online from JustFab. I have been seeing a lot of their ads recently & was curious. Their every pair for £35 struck me as little too good to be true. However I was pleasantly surprised after having a neb. Their heels aren’t really my thing, but I loved their flats & boots. As an introductory offer I got a two pairs of shoes for £35, which is an excellent deal by anyone’s standards. I am totally satisfied with the quality & fit. They also have a large selection of non-leather shoes, which is great for veggies. The small disadvantage is that you have to remember to log in every month & declare if you’re not buying anything, otherwise they charge you (the charge is applied to your account as credit). Other than that I would definitely recommend giving JustFab a bash.

Paint it black…

i am off to a fancy hotel for my friend’s wedding later today. I am looking forward to my little mini escape. Before I jump in the shower I just have time to dash off a quick blog post.

On Friday I finally got to see Cold in July. I highly recommend this film. It is impossible to describe as it starts as one thing & morphs into something else. It has a great cast & brilliant twists. Go see it.

It was drizzly on Friday, but still really stuffy, tricky weather to dress for. I opted for this tunic dress. It’s light and comfortable with some really pretty embroidery. I stayed monochrome with my jewellery, but couldn’t resist pairing my dress with these star print leggings.

Bits & Pieces…

I was going through my clothes trying to clear a little space in my packed wardrobe when I came across a skirt I had forgotten I owned. I’m not sure how I managed to forget this skirt as on discovering it I instantly fell in back in love. So, I immediately changed outfit & wore it to see a movie with my wee sister.

The red kimono I wanted to wear with it was in the washing machine, so I decided I would experiment with some pattern clashing. I quite liked the outcome.

I really love the fish taily detail on the back of this skirt; it makes it a bit more special. I am also infatuated with my new floral print kimono, I bought a size up as I wanted it to be loose & oversized.

20140701-145201-53521332.jpg

I teamed my mismatched clothes with my all-time favourite sandals & tried something new with my hair, which turned out ok, but will need a little practise to perfect.

I wanted to see ‘Cold in July’, but my darling sis was very keen to see ‘Maleficent’. She won the movie debate in the end. It’s a sweet take on a fairy tale, but it’s essentially a kid’s movie, which is really not my thing. Next time I will definitely be choosing.

inequality promises that it’s here to stay…

Last week I had a flick through glamour & immediately remembered why I stopped buying women’s magazines. I felt a rush of anger at the content. Despite nods to feminism (tiny footnote on feminist websites), the magazine continues to be a bastion of incredibly thin women, articles about the calorie content of food & men’s preferences about a variety of issues.
Let’s start with Dawn O’Porter’s column on women in panel shows. She expresses rather unhelpful opinions such as
‘Or a channel is brave enough to commission female- strong panel show where women don’t have to compete with men; the problem will be the same’.
Whilst I’m all for more female strong programming, I strongly reject the suggestion that women will do better when they are not forced to compete with men. Claiming we need men free zones in order to be accomplished is bullshit. Women can hold their own in mixed panel shows the same way they can in any area of life.
O’ porter’s next gem was to declare women as funny as men, but not as competitive, therefore females on panel shows will just sit back & let the men battle out it. Eh, what? Clearly no one has told dawn that attributing emotions & characteristics to a specific gender is sexism. These tired old tropes about the differences between men and women are feeding into our patriarchal society. When women are still telling other women that they aren’t up to playing with the big boys, we have a problem.
Next up, the ’hey, it’s ok’ page. This is basically a list of female gender stereotypes, but hey it’s ok, don’t worry you’re only a woman. This issue contained the following gem,
‘….to have mainlined a coke, small popcorn & cracked into the revels before they’ve even started the film trailers.’
Did you get that? It’s ok to eat. Absolutely fine to make a pig of yourself, well as long as you don’t forget it’s a SMALL popcorn. Girls eat small. Remember that.

If you can bear to read on you will reach an article named ‘pluck what?’ written by Luke Leith. This piece is handily labelled G MEN, just in case you missed the fact that it is written by man. The man in question first gives us a row for casually insulting men’s appearance. I’d suggest that if your partner is talking to you in any of the ways mentioned the issue is not gender based, but related to the fact that you are dating an arsehole. He goes on to give us a little potted history of gender politics in the UK. Apparently we are not-quite-there-but-almost (a sexism free society), phew, what a relief. Which leads him to his big point; all this feminism has hurt men. Men are now sometimes portrayed in an unflattering light in advertising. We women are just too harsh on the poor men folk these days. We must not hurt their feelings. Oh, those poor men. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think objectifying men or labelling them imbeciles is ok. However, the painting of men as victims of sexism is laughable. Reverse sexism isn’t a thing. It doesn’t exist because it is not institutionalised. White, cis, males still overwhelming hold the power in society. When the world is constructed in favour of your sex, sexism is not a discriminatory factor.
We are then presented with a guide on how to approach our partners about them balding, putting on weight o their sartorial choices. This is insulting because it assume that
a/ we care about those things, rather than, you know, loving our partners for who they are.
b/ that we are cruel bitches who would mock a person we supposedly care about
Of course what is most annoying is that a women’s magazine feels the need to employ a man to instruct us.

My next bone of contention is yet another piece by a man. This time Eric Sullivan tells how men feel about our sex toys. Why what men think about what we use to masturbate is even an issue, I don’t know. Eric tells us that when he stumbled upon his girlfriend’s dildo he felt aggrieved; he went so far as to accuse her of cheating on him with a plastic cock. Eric’s girlfriend explained that she wasn’t replacing him. Eric was of course skilled & competent in the bedroom. This made his fragile ego feel a little better. Nevertheless, the only way to make Eric feel completely comfortable was to involve him in the dildo’s use. So, there we have it, women have no right to own their sexuality. We must satisfy all our desires in a manner that does not intimidate men. We must consider how men feel about tools that are designed for our pleasure.
After what seems like a million pages of fashion, make up & advertising this issue ends with ‘dos & don’ts’ a page which congratulates celebs they magazine deems to look good & ridicules those whose clothing choices they do not approve of. Screw the sisterhood, eh?
Besides these troublesome pieces the magazine continues to perpetuate the thin is beautiful myth. There is no sign of anyone who even remotely resembles me. None of the insanely expensive clothes featured would be available in my size; larger women do not exist in glamour world. It is a world that is also predominately white, assumes that everyone is straight & that how we look is our main concern. All this from a magazine that frequently tries to attach itself to feminism, I despair.
