Things I can’t believe I have to say again… Part 1

It may be a little over optimistic to say that summer is in the way, but I think I can at least say that winter is over. Whilst I can’t wait to enjoy more lazy days in the sun, hot days always give me a moments pause.

The reason for my second guessing is our old friend shame. As much as strive I to love my body there are still so many people who’d rather I didn’t. My body does not fit societal standards of beauty. Scrap that, I don’t even fit societal standards of normal. The fact that I refuse to hide my fat, scarred flesh rocks the normality boat even more vigorously.

It has taken me years to be able to celebrate my form. My ability to wear whatever I please & shed layers in the heat is a hard won victory. I won’t lie I often still have to steel myself to step outside in a vest. Not because I feel ashamed of my a scars or my past or flab or peely wally complexion, but because there are tonnes of folk who really, really want me to.

Staring is a given. Staring combined with nudging a mate & directing them to also have a gawk is also fairly frequent. Less common, but still occuring more than you would think is the person who thinks they should actually comment on my body. Oh & I give them so much to work with. Strangers just love to get angry, sad, concerned and curious about my body. Sometimes I can just shrug that off. Often I will snark back & think these strangers pathetic. However, there are times when for whatever reason, I’m just not up for the judgement of unknown members of the general public. Their stares, nudges & comments ruin my day. I do momentarily feel ashamed and scared and like I should never leave the house again. And this, my friends, is not ok.

So, here’s a little advice.

OTHER PEOPLE’S BODIES ARE NOT YOUR BUSINESS.

Your thoughts on other people’s appearance are not important. Strangers do not want to hear them. Your moral judgements are your problem, don’t make them anyone else’s. Likewise your hang ups.

STARING IS RUDE.

Always. There are no excuses. If you find yourself accidentally staring, stop. If you see someone you think looks weird, bad, crazy just remember plenty of people find your visuals unappetising too. Oh & don’t oggle them.

In short, don’t be that person. Don’t be the one who spoils someone’s lovely summer day. You do you & let the rest of world do them.

Fathers be good to your daughters…

Last Sunday was Father’s Day, so my sis & I treated dad to a bit of lunch. We also bestowed upon him soppy cards & our delightful chatter. As the sun still had it’s hat on, we also snapped some outfit photos.

I had opted for a wee bit of gold brocade dressed down with a vest & some pins.

Skirt – Glad Rags

Bandeau Vest – Primark

Cardigan – New Look
The cardi wasn’t really required; a lighter floatier cover up would have been more suitable. It’s hard to choose outfits when the weather might change at any minute. Glasgow fashionistas have it hard! On the plus side, finding a bit of greenery for a an impromptu photo shoot is never a problem.

The Summer Smiles…

This weekend was a very rare thing, a sunny bank holiday weekend. I made the most of the weather & have been the busiest bee. Of course, me being me, I forgot to photograph most of my awesome outfits. I was too busy looking hot & having fun. Luckily for you I did manage to capture today’s look.

In keeping with my usual aesthetic I jumbled up colours & prints. I am very pleased with the look. Today was a fairly easy going day; visiting Dad, then errands & photos with my sis. I wanted something I felt pretty in that was also a low effort wear. The sun had deserted us, but I was still in summery clothes mode. The resulting combo ticked all my boxes.

After Barbecues, a beer festival, frozen cocktails & family fun with my baby nephew I am exhausted. My knee is giving me hell & the fatigue is starting to show. I have tackled this with my new beauty trick; distraction lippy. The brighter my lipstick the less folk notice any signs of burn out. This purpley/pink has served me well.

As I write this it is pouring down outside. It’s just as well I had so many summer hijinks this weekend as the season may well be over in Scotland!

‘Cos it’s raining….

I’ve been waiting to do my summer Wishlist for a while. I kept hoping summer would come back.  As it’s now July, i’ve resigned myself to the fact that the sun has left me for good.

For my Scottish summer picks I’m going for light fabrics that can be easily layered. So, lots of dresses, soft shirts & the occasional piece to fancy things up. I have also slipt in some items that I want for my next Australia trip. Brisbane never lets me down on the heat factor.

Asos Curve, Club L Lounge.

Club L Lounge, Yours.

Yes, that is a dress with a hood; come to Mama. This season I seem to attracted to neutral & bright tones in equal measures. Fabric wise the concensus is tactile & super soft.

Forever21, Lindy Bop, Simply Be.

Club L Lounge, Asos Curve, Simply Be.

I’m loving splits & dip hems. Leggings are of course an essential when it might be really nippy outside. As always I will be playing with retro & contemporay styles. I have been desperately seeking a pretty bralet that can handle my boobs & I’m hoping this is the one. I’m thinking in Brisbane I can rock this on it’s own & here layer under a sheer shirt.

Monsoon, Forever21, New Look.

Irregular Choice, Asos Curve, Asos Curve.

Florals & hippy chick lace spell out summer to me. I really can’t wait to get to Oz to float around with my Muffin in these.

M&S, Alice & You.

Simply Be, Forever21.

Asos Curve, Club L Lounge.

New Look, Asos Curve, Converse.

Yellow converse will add a pop to any outfit. As will the caged bra lingerie. I love the bondage light look, it’s always fun when your underwear can double as outerwear!

There you have it. My most desired items for this summer. Now it’s time to get buying. Look out for which pieces make it into my body.

Oh & I have a new pink lipstick & a pretty rose gold nose ring. Aren’t I a lucky girl?

Summer in the city…

A few week ago I was invited to a Hotter Shoes blogger event. I’ll be honest I didn’t know very much about Hotter & the little I did had led me to believe that it probably wouldn’t meet my shoe needs. Well, it seems I had judged them unfairly.

It is true that Hotter do have styles that cater to an older audience, but they offer a lot more besides. I was particularly taken with their more casual sandals & wedges. I love an outlandish heel, but these days they only really come out for the big occasions. Something flat and not pain inducing is more my everyday brief. Enter Hotter with their focus on comfort and fit.

Unfortunately for me a few of styles I really liked included leather, which obviously clashes with my  veggie sensibilities. Hence, I was feeling a little down cast until one  of the super Hotter staff members unearthed these cuties.

The weather took a while to co operate, but over the last week or so my wee floral beauties have hardly been off my feet. I can attest that all those bubbles in the soles really do make my feet feel cushioned delightfully cushioned. They don’t rub or pinch or harass my tootsies in any way. I suspect they’ll be getting plenty of wear this summer.

Wildflowers….

On Sunday I embarked on a wee visit to see my Mum, which descended into a mad wild goose chase. Much frustration & losing of tempers later we rescued the day with lingerie shopping & cake.

It goes without saying that we also found time for a little blog shoot. I was tempted out into the wind by this bed of pretty flowers. I’ve become a bit of a wild flower devotee. Not only do I love their, well, wild beauty, the are a life source for our bees. If you weren’t aware, our bees are in danger & we really need them. 90% of vegetable crops depend on bee pollination. Those fuzzy bellied little guys are very useful. So, if you have a place to do so, plant some wild flowers.

Anyway, after my own little detour, I will get back on point. I threw together a couple of items that were meant to see me through the a long hot summer, but actually require leggings & cardi to be wearable. In Scotland we work with what we’ve got.

I’m glad this sheer shirt works with layers as I love it. It’s nice to know I can get some wear out of it as the seasons change.

Everybody walk the dinosaur…

My photographer & I both had rough weeks. By Friday we were more than ready for a pick me up. The sun lured us outside for a cocktail & the prospect of dinosaurs coaxed us back in.

A hot day calls for something floaty & this shirt dress was just the thing. Paired with a lace effect dress I felt chic, not to mention comfortable.

Leaving the cinema to balmy summer’s night tempted us into a little blog shoot. I love photos taken in the last gasps of day light. That soft glow works for me.

Sandals – schuh

Bracelet – Made for me by my niece

The dinosaurs were marvellous. As with the others in the franchise Jurassic World seems to be very much on the side of giant lizards. I’m all for a summer blockbuster that’s telling humans to stop fucking with nature.

Last, but not least, a few snaps of my city basking in the summer sun.

Time after time…

I had a realisation whilst internet shopping this week. I was searching for some casual summer bits & was struggling to find exactly what I was after. Along with adding some of this seasons trend to my wardrobe, I really wanted to find some timeless summer staples (all be it my version of staples).

I scratched my head & then the obvious dawned. I almost always shop in the same small collection of stores. So, I set off on an Internet quest; find pretty things in shops that have been thus far alien to me. Being plus size I anticipated problems, but I was pleasantly surprised by the array of places who stock my size (anywhere from uk 18 to 22). So, with out further ado I present you with my finds. All of which I intend to purchase as soon as my purse permits.

I haven’t shopped in Gap for years. I think I associate it with jeans, which I never wear. However, a quick squiz at their website revealed this clever piece. It’s a simple stretchy cotton dress that can be worn four ways (strapless maxi, midi, mini & maxi skirt) just by folding the top section. It’s ingenuity pleases me.

I tend to leave House of Fraser for cosmetics & fragrance purchase, but again it’s website had some surprises for me. Lines had a delightfully vivid shirt dress, which would work perfectly for more corporate occasions. I also discovered Desigual, a shop that I suspect was opened with me in mind. It’s design are quirky, bright & ideal for summer.

My favourite find for absolute classics is  Esprit. This is a shop that I honestly expected to be a budget buster. How wrong I was. They have a great selection of summer classics at yummy prices. My favourites were this tie dye number & this gorgeous denim maxi. I just know I will wear these time after time.

No summer collection would be complete without a peasant dress & here is a delicious example from Phase Eight. White, linen & oh so 70’s. I’m sold.

Saturday night at the movies…

Being cooped up feeling rotten was really starting to get to me by Saturday. My darling sis came to the rescue & accompanied me to any early  movie. We were still enjoying a taste of summer at the weekend and my outfit reflected this. Colourful, slouchy, light & oh so comfortable.

The treggings are a new & perfect addition. Up close the look like tapestry, which is all kinds of awesome. I can see me teaming them with everything.

Treggings – Asos Curve

Dress – H&M

Cardigan – John Lewis

It’s no secret that I love my city & I honestly can’t stop help myself from snapping away at its streets. This is one of my favourites taken en route to the cinema.

Oh & our evenings entertainment was ‘The Duff’ a trashy feel good teen comed because sometimes you want to laugh not think.

Spring/Summer wishlist…

The shops are filling up with their spring/summer collections & I am excited. I seem to be gaining in experimental confidence and cannot wait to try some new looks.

I am delighted about the surge in velvet pieces, I basically want velvet everything. Play/jumpsuits have hopped up my want list. I’m a later adopter, but can’t wait to rock some all in ones this summer. Florals, funky flats & my go to skater shape are must haves. Add to that killer going out dresses plus some of that 70’s vibe and you have my coveted new season looks.
